Stream Biomedical Nominated for 2026 Prix Galien USA Award for Best Startup

HOUSTON, TX, UNITED STATES, August 13, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Stream Biomedical, Inc., a biotechnology company developing regenerative biologic therapies for neurological diseases, has been nominated for the 2026 Prix Galien USA Award for Best Startup.

Often described as the biotechnology and life sciences equivalent of the Nobel Prize, the Prix Galien Awards recognize many of the most significant pharmaceutical and biotechnology innovations of the past half-century. The nomination recognizes Stream's discovery and development of rLG3, a first-in-class recombinant protein therapeutic designed to amplify a newly discovered endogenous repair pathway fundamental to the brain's ability to recover following disease or injury.

“We are deeply honored to be nominated by the Prix Galien committee for this prestigious award and to be included among an exceptional group of innovators advancing the future of medicine,” said William Schwieterman, M.D., Chief Executive Officer of Stream Biomedical. “This nomination is a testament to the seminal work of our Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. H. Davis Adkisson, and our Director of Translational Programs, Dr. Bryan Clossen, who together established the scientific foundation for rLG3 and have helped bring new hope for patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other devastating neurological disorders.”

Stream's work is founded on three interdependent scientific advances. First, the company identified a previously unrecognized endogenous repair pathway that the brain naturally activates in response to neurological injury and disease. Second, Stream harnessed biotechnology to develop rLG3, a first-in-class recombinant therapeutic designed to amplify and augment this intrinsic repair response across neurological disorders where natural repair mechanisms are insufficient. Third, Stream is pioneering an innovative clinical development approach that combines advanced imaging and molecular biomarkers to directly measure rLG3's biological activity and target engagement, providing a more efficient path to demonstrating therapeutic activity and ultimately clinical benefit.

Preclinical studies have demonstrated that rLG3 reduces blood-vessel leakage and inflammation, protects brain tissue, and improves recovery in models of Alzheimer's disease, where Stream is initially focusing clinical development, as well as traumatic brain injury, ischemic stroke, spinal cord injury, and diabetes-related vascular disease. Collectively, these findings suggest that targeting neurovascular dysfunction may provide a common therapeutic approach for multiple neurological disorders.

“Prix Galien recognition provides powerful validation of both the originality of our science and its potential clinical impact in a field with few successful treatment options,” Dr. Schwieterman added. “Our ultimate goal is straightforward - to translate these scientific advances into safe and effective therapies that improve the lives of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other serious neurological disorders.”

The Galien Foundation today announced this year's Prix Galien USA nominees for “Best Digital Health Solution,” “Best Medical Technology,” “Incubators, Accelerators and Equity,” and “Best Startup.” Winners will be honored at the Prix Galien USA Awards Ceremony on October 29, 2026 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

About Stream Biomedical
Stream Biomedical, Inc. is a Houston, Texas-based biotechnology company developing vascular matrikines, a new class of regenerative biologics based on naturally occurring repair molecules found in the body. The company has successfully manufactured highly purified rLG3 in support of its planned clinical development program. Stream's scientific and operational activities are directed by William Schwieterman, M.D. (Chief Executive Officer), H. Davis Adkisson, Ph.D. (Chief Scientific Officer), Bryan Clossen, Ph.D. (Director of Translational Programs), and Seth Fisher (Director of Manufacturing & CMC), working closely with an extensive network of scientific and clinical collaborators, including a distinguished Scientific Advisory Board whose members include Lennart Mucke, M.D., Ramon Diaz-Arrastia, M.D., Ph.D., and Andy Shih, Ph.D.

About rLG3
rLG3 is the 21-kDa recombinant analog of the LG3 domain of Perlecan Domain V. Stream licensed Perlecan Domain V technology from Texas A&M University, where earlier research by Dr. Greg Bix and colleagues helped characterize the biological activity of Perlecan Domain V. Building on that work, Stream scientists discovered, engineered, and developed rLG3 as a novel therapeutic designed to amplify an endogenous vascular repair pathway that restores blood-brain barrier integrity and promotes recovery following neurological injury and disease. https://doi10.1007/s12975-022-01089-2. Research conducted by Stream supporting the discovery and preclinical development of rLG3 has been supported in part by grants from the National Institutes of Health. The company is initially developing rLG3 for Alzheimer's disease, with future applications to other neurological disorders characterized by neurovascular dysfunction.
